Makayla Dagenais
Makayla is an Honours Bachelor of Science student majoring in Psychology at the University of Ottawa. Passionate about neuroscience and mental health, she has gained valuable research experience as a volunteer in the CRANILab at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. She is also an active volunteer at the Clinical EEG and Neuroimaging Lab, where she contributes to the Contrave study, investigating the effects of an anti-obesity medication on brain structures.
Beyond research, Makayla serves as Vice President of PennyDrops at the University of Ottawa, a student-run organization that equips youth with the knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions through engaging workshops and mentorship programs. She has also been a dedicated volunteer for UNICEF uOttawa, helping to raise awareness and funds to support children worldwide by providing access to education, healthcare, and clean water.
Her background includes analytical work in cognitive neuroscience as well as organic chemistry, which has led to co-authorship on a manuscript, “The Role of Language in Learning, Communicating, and Doing Chemistry,” with Dr. Alison Flynn. Additionally, Makayla has hands-on experience conducting brain imaging research on adolescent concussions. She is committed to using her knowledge and skills to advance mental health research and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by psychological and neurological conditions.
In her free time, Makayla loves travelling, exploring new cultures, and seeking out new adventures—whether it’s experiencing different cuisines, landscapes, or traditions. She also enjoys practicing hot yoga as a way to stay active and mindful. In the winter, you’ll often find her on the slopes, making the most of the snowboarding season.
